Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on unneeded presents can be considered a little discourteous – except if it's done the right way.

A Charitable Auction

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, combined, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to sold to the highest bidder by a Italian art dealer. A date remains to be announced, but the goal is to conduct the sale by year's end, with all funds raised benefiting various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

These gifts reportedly kept in a storage room on the third floor of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been gathering dust indefinitely.

A complete inventory is yet to be made public, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The query raised if a legal value limit was being respected. By law, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.

An International Assortment of Presents

The collection includes:

  • A scarf from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
  • A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her allies, with winning over foreign leaders and making Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a unconventional way to handle the state presents that build up during a time in office.
