‘Oh How We Will Miss This Man’: Meg Ryan Posts Heartfelt Tribute to Director Rob Reiner
The actress Meg Ryan has shared a moving homage to the departed filmmaker Rob Reiner, under whose direction she worked in the hit rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
A Heartbreaking Event
Reiner was located lifeless with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their residence in LA at the weekend.
“Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan shared on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”
Court Case Developments
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder and appeared in court today. He’s being detained without the option of bail. Sources state that Reiner’s daughter Romy was the one who located her father.
“It is my belief that from this horror, positive change and understanding can emerge,” Ryan went on to write. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”
Family Members Issue a Message
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy released a message today. “No words can convey the constant, profound sorrow we feel,” they said. “The tragic, shattering loss of our parents is an experience no one should have to face. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Hollywood Tributes Pour In
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, similarly honored Reiner with a statement shared yesterday along with names including Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“No one matched his comic instinct, his dedication to rhythmic dialogue, or his elegant sharpening of drama,” the statement said. “He adored his actors. He elevated his writers. Freedom was his key offering. He listened to ideas and included you in the creative journey. Everyone felt like part of a crew. His direction was a gift, but his legacy is broader.”
A Lasting Cinematic Legacy
When Harry Met Sally was a critical and commercial success in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and scoring Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner met Michele Singer Reiner while making When Harry Met Sally. The pair were brought together by Barry Sonnenfeld, a director and friend.
Reiner’s celebrated filmography also included classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were together in marriage for 36 years.
