The Hornets Dismiss Paulo Pezzolano Following a 10-Match Stint and Bring Back Former Boss as Head Coach
The Championship side have taken the decision to end their manager's contract after just a brief period and 10 matches in control, announcing the reappointment of ex-manager Javi Gracia as his successor.
It is understood that Pezzolano, who was hired in the spring to replace the interim manager, along with his technical staff, were told not to lead practice on Wednesday as speculation about his exit grew on Tuesday.
Pezzolano was summoned for a meeting where he was named the 11th manager Watford have let go since the start of the year 2020.
"The club is delighted to welcome back Javi," stated the club's chief executive. "His passion, guidance and well-defined plan will foster consistency, unity and momentum.
"We are sure there are many supporters who hoped Gracia had never departed in the past. With this young and exciting squad, we are certain his experience and qualities are exactly what we need now."
Gracia guided the team to the FA Cup final for the only other occasion in the club's history in that year, but was sacked a few matches into the following campaign and last managed at Leeds in 2023.
"Personally, the emotion I have in this moment is that I'm returning home. It was the most enjoyable time of my career," he stated. "I have very good memories and we have unfinished business here. For us, it's a further significant move in our career.
"This is a unique opportunity for us, and at the same time we are highly motivated for this season. If we are united, we are more powerful."
Pezzolano's sacking comes even after their win against Oxford United at Vicarage Road on Saturday, which lifted them to 11th in the Championship after a difficult opening that earned five points from the initial six matches.
Pezzolano is reportedly left dismayed by the decision to sack him, having guided the side to a three-match unbeaten run that also included a victory at home over Hull and a draw at Portsmouth, leaving them three points off the playoff places.
Pezzolano joined shortly after the end of the previous campaign with a proven track record of leading clubs to promotion in Spain, Brazil and Uruguay.
